What I Learned From Billy Mays About Marketing

Billy Mays was irritating and brash as he interrupted our programs, but I bought his products!  He was successful, not because he was politically correct or beautiful, but because he was passionate about his products.  He would not sell a product he didn’t test and believe in.  He wanted us to trust him when he hawked his wares, so he was picky about the products that he attached his name and face to.

His integrity was the first thing I learned from him.  Don’t sell something that you can’t test or otherwise observe in use.

His passion was the next thing I know I need to pattern after him.  Be enthusiastic about your products.   Be ready to talk about it at any time with any group of people.

Come up with a trademark presentation, his was brash, but he was always professional, clean, trimmed beard and ironed clothes.  He looked like a professional and acted like one.

I for one will miss him.  I trusted him to narrow down the choices I had to chose from for many of the products in my life.  Who of you is going to pick up the torch and develop yourself to be the next self employed pitchman extraordinaire?
